It's disheartening, to say the least, to hear that those conversations are beginning like that. It doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know what kind of time and money you need to continue your work, but if you feel like things aren't finished, then yes, you *have* to, right? It seems like you're able to take a step back and recognize that your own reception is secondary to the work. I want to think that there are better, smarter people out there operating in the art world, and that good work will find its audience. But who knows. I don't have too much faith in art gatekeepers. Good luck.

I will be honest and say I do not regret not going to graduate school.

I don't believe that graduate school is a continuation of my art-making. Sure it can help and push me towards the art superstar, but let's be serious.. it's highly unlikely and it's not my goal. Also, if photography is important to me, I will find a way back to it.. and I have and continue to.

I see how there is an influx in female students in the art field, but only a handful actual continue the path. (From what I know, I am probably the only one in my BFA class to still be doing photography.) It's sad to see and I am determined to not be one of those people who dumps my BFA money down the drain.

Jane, Going into debt was never a consideration for me so I never went to grad school. I come from less than a working class background so that amount of money is not trivial. And while grad school is the answer for some, it is not the be all and end all for others. There are other ways to stay engaged and focused on your art. Maybe it will take a little longer to get to where you want to be because you have to have a day job, but if it's how you can make it work, that's the way it'll be. And of course you can always change your mind.

I'm sorry to hear this, jane tam =(. *hug

It's a tossup I know way too well, and I'm all but exhausted from the sacrifices I've had to make out of financial necessity. I FEELS you. And I def understand the heavy processing that led you here. I'm sure you made the right choice for where you are right now..

But something about this feels hugely incomplete.
Don't it?

Just wanted to alert you and peers Jane that we posted today on adobeairstream.com a great story by Leanne Goebel on this show. The link is here: http://adobeairstream.com/component/zine/article/340-new-american-photography-at-fotofest.html

It's always great to see the new takes on Walker Evans, if that's indeed how the artists feel about things as well as how the curator does.
