Daniel Cooney asked me to participate in the Emerging Photographer’s Auction this time around, and I am certainly in good company. The image above is up for bidding over at iGavel. Nymphoto cohort, Maria Passarotti, is also participating!
I wouldn’t have been able to go to Lau Fau San by myself last winter. My aunt’s best friend lived in the outlying islands of Hong Kong and is lucky enough to have a car. They drove us to this area, known for oyster farming and fresh seafood. It is also an area where many films were shot because it is one of the few old-school seafood markets. Nowhere close to the city and secluded from everything. The ocean looks out over to a distant bridge that connects Hong Kong to mainland China. I was so close that even my phone service changed to mainland China. This area, although very rural, reminds me of what my parents and grandparents grew up knowing, or from what I hear. Hopefully I can return and visit the actual villages of my relatives someday.
I hope you look through all the auction lots. There is certainly a fair amount of good work. Whether you bid on my image or not, I’d suggest investing in art. Invest in what you like and can’t live without. Spread the news.

Since I couldn’t make the cross-global trip to China for the Pingyao International Photography Festival, I made sure my awesome curator, Jamason Chen, take some photos of the event and whatnot. Seems like I also won an award there! My project, “Foreigners in Paradise” has won the award of a Ping Yao International Photographic Festival 2008 Emerging Photographer.
Stalking the festival website, looking for more information and using google translate, I finally found my name amongst the news article (2008映像杯中国平遥国际摄影大展新人奖: 谭珍玲 with 10 other talented artists~).

If you head over to the main website, you should see I updated the website and included (or edited) images in Foreigners in Paradise, Asleep at Sea, and Discarded Delights. Also, I finally added a mailing list form in the Contact page, so if you wanna keep up with what I’m up to, fill the form out.
Recently I’ve been honored to be asked to join Nymphoto. I jumped on the opportunity since it was my chance to have a community that’ll motivate me as well as be part of something meaningful. It’s hard coming out of college, without a job, and wondering, “so I am suppose to be doing something….” I really could not understand how artists motivated themselves to keep production flowing. After meeting the members and seeing how much I can learn and contribute to the collective and to myself, I regained my confidence to keep working. I’m seriously in great company (Nina, Rona, Candace, Maria, Margot, Talia, and Melanie). Sometimes you need that kick in the rear.
Anyways, I’m the Featured Artist this time around on Nymphoto’s main website. Check the blog for weekly conversations with fellow female photographers. I think it’s a great resource to have!

I’m going to have one image showing in NYC in a group show and then it flies across the sea to its sister gallery in Korea. Pretty amazing but the shipping costs was something I glossed over during my last-minute application to the show. It’s a little gut-wrenching with only a measly paycheck.
More details next week, I assume~
In other news.. I came up with a new title for my family series. Foreigners in Paradise. Be on the look out for a major website update mid-next week.

My family series (which I really need help coming up w/ a better title for) is traveling to Tempe, Arizona and Ping Yao, China come September and October! Very very exciting news since these are one of the first opportunities I have to show anywhere besides on a college campus! Though, I really wish I had money to attend them both… =/
I need to do some major color correcting since I have discovered so many new techniques from my new day job. Going to spend some quality time in my little cave for a little while.
More news soon about the shows!!
