Nymphoto Book Launch and Exhibition, plus One Call for Entries

The difference between Nymphoto and some other collectives is that we are a close knit community of just a few members. (Our meetings run hours long.. food keeps us sane.) We strive to keep each other motivated and it’s especially valuable to me since I was fresh out of college when I was asked to join. Although we are committed to promote women working in photography and creating a voice for them, we are mostly artists too. We have work that wants to be shown and recognized. We have full time jobs but are motivated to keep our goals and intentions going strong.

I’m pleased to announce Nymphoto’s newest projects.

We’re publishing our first book! The Conversations in book form! Also, we are happy to collaborate with gallery owner and director, Sasha Wolf, to put on a physical exhibition coinciding with the book. The title of the book and show is simple called,”Nymphoto: Conversations Volume I.” Join us on May 6, 2009 at the gallery for our book launch and opening reception.

Ladies! We’re also doing a Call for Entries for an group exhibition following the book launch exhibition. Deadline is April 7th. Please go to www.nymphoto.com for details and to submit. We’re looking for the best in contemporary photography by women so please pass the word on.

Just a website update and Nymphoto

If you head over to the main website, you should see I updated the website and included (or edited) images in Foreigners in Paradise, Asleep at Sea, and Discarded Delights. Also, I finally added a mailing list form in the Contact page, so if you wanna keep up with what I’m up to, fill the form out.

Recently I’ve been honored to be asked to join Nymphoto. I jumped on the opportunity since it was my chance to have a community that’ll motivate me as well as be part of something meaningful. It’s hard coming out of college, without a job, and wondering, “so I am suppose to be doing something….” I really could not understand how artists motivated themselves to keep production flowing. After meeting the members and seeing how much I can learn and contribute to the collective and to myself, I regained my confidence to keep working. I’m seriously in great company (Nina, Rona, Candace, Maria, Margot, Talia, and Melanie). Sometimes you need that kick in the rear.

Anyways, I’m the Featured Artist this time around on Nymphoto’s main website. Check the blog for weekly conversations with fellow female photographers. I think it’s a great resource to have!

I’m going to have one image showing in NYC in a group show and then it flies across the sea to its sister gallery in Korea. Pretty amazing but the shipping costs was something I glossed over during my last-minute application to the show. It’s a little gut-wrenching with only a measly paycheck.

More details next week, I assume~

In other news.. I came up with a new title for my family series. Foreigners in Paradise. Be on the look out for a major website update mid-next week.

My family series (which I really need help coming up w/ a better title for) is traveling to Tempe, Arizona and Ping Yao, China come September and October! Very very exciting news since these are one of the first opportunities I have to show anywhere besides on a college campus! Though, I really wish I had money to attend them both… =/

I need to do some major color correcting since I have discovered so many new techniques from my new day job. Going to spend some quality time in my little cave for a little while.

More news soon about the shows!!

Ah, I miss Syracuse. (Never thought I would say that.) I miss Light Work, the darkrooms, and the great staff.

While working there for pretty much my whole time in Syracuse, I really loved the opportunity to see the artists that took up residencies there. Love seeing the prints getting freshly printed after the hours laboring over color correction. Love talking to them about their process and seeing how dedicated they were in producing work. Love getting advice and developing relationships and get immediately inspired to make my own work.

Garie Waltzer was an artist in residence at the beginning of the year. Her gorgeous large portfolio of carbon pigmented prints on rag paper were inspiring and breathtaking. She travels the world photographing outdoor urban landscapes from the tops of buildings, creating a scrutinizing view of the world when looked at closely. (Seeing these prints in person are so worth it.)

She currently has a show at Humphrey Atrium Gallery at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. The exhibit will run June 23 – Sept. 5, 2008.

With all this art school drama, I still want to make the best out of it. So I created a website with a sampling of work from the rest of our classmates in relation to our exhibition this coming Saturday night.

So check out our hard work.

www.janetam.com/star

The show is one night event (sadly) and will be on from 6-9pm, this coming Saturday, May 3rd. I’ll take installation shots during the show. All work going up for the show will definitely be for sale.

and yes, prints are still for sale. and i dearly need some funds!
