My family series (which I really need help coming up w/ a better title for) is traveling to Tempe, Arizona and Ping Yao, China come September and October! Very very exciting news since these are one of the first opportunities I have to show anywhere besides on a college campus! Though, I really wish I had money to attend them both… =/

I need to do some major color correcting since I have discovered so many new techniques from my new day job. Going to spend some quality time in my little cave for a little while.

More news soon about the shows!!

I’m getting inspired looking at Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Dioramas from the Museum of Natural History. Now is the time to be a tourist in New York, look up, pay attention, and not let the city’s identity pass me by. (How will I sneak a tripod into museums?)

Cynthia Wang was kind enough to share some light about her work in an interview I posted on Nymphoto. Go read it.

hired in new york and not speaking a familiar language

July 19th, 2008

Coming from a fine art background, the fashion-editorial side of photography is a whole different way of thinking. I am currently working for a printing and retouching studio and learning how to make models and celebrities more beautiful than they are. It’s amazing how much Photoshop can change the original image. It becomes a bit frustrating since I have not developed the eye for seeing how far is too far when “enhancing” these models.

It’s also been hard motivating myself to work on my own projects. I think I’m starting to lose the drive. As much as I love my family series and would love to continue working on it, my insecurities of being Chinese American have made me very self-conscious when communicating to my family. When they only speak Chinese, and I don’t have to capability to say how serious I am about photographing the family, it gets difficult. I wish I can speak fluently in Cantonese but with as much Chinese television and outings with my mother, vocabulary isn’t improving. Just have to somehow get over my hurdles..

Working full time has its disadvantages for artists… (and reality television takes a lot of my time too.. ha)

I received a nice email from Jordi Huisman today. I checked out his website and really like his series titled, “It’s Better to be Home.” (Dig the title and from one of my favorite countries, The Netherlands)
