Thanks to Karly Wildenhaus’s blog (Shades of Time), I came across Peter Ha’s series entitled Affinities. His self-published book, available on Lulu, shows a preview of his book with an essay by Ha’s older sister about his upbringing. Ha photographs family members and close friends.

Peter Ha’s Affinities series will open for exhibition at The Finch Gallery in Chicago this Friday, November 30th with a book release as well.

First Annual Regional Reviews at CPW

The Center of Photography at Woodstock, NY is holding its first annual Regional Reviews on February 9.

The photography community is not only centered in the city anymore as more and more communities are growing in exposure and offering more opportunity in Central and Upstate NY. (I should know, I work at Light Work Community Darkrooms , part of Light Work in Syracuse, NY.) The Regional Reviews will give photographers a chance to meet with a minimum of five reviewers from galleries, publications, and institutions in the surrounding Central and Upstate NY area. I haven’t been to many reviews but a minimum of five is an amazing opportunity. Usually you’ll get lucky to meet with three in one day, let alone five.

CPW is honored to have an esteemed group of reviewers participating in this event. They include; Chronogram (Kingston) | Digital Art Space (Troy) | Donskoj & Company (Kingston) | Exposed Gallery of Fine Photography (Delmar) | Fovea Editions (Beacon) | Galerie BMG (Woodstock) | The Image Works (Woodstock) | Nicole Fiacco Gallery (Hudson) | The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art (New Paltz) | Photo Sensualis (Woodstock) | Photographic Center of the Capital District (Troy) | The Center for Photography at Woodstock | and others!

To learn more about the Reviews, see bios of the reviewers, and/or to register, go to their website here.

Woodstock is only 2.5 hours from the city and is a great little town with lots of arty vibes.

Photography sure is an important aspect of my life now but being in art school (almost all my life) has allowed me to appreciate and experiment with all different forms of creating art. One of my favorite mediums to dabble in is printmaking. Mind you, I hated printmaking in high school and I chose a printmaking studio in my sophomore year in college because no other studio would fit my schedule. What was frustrating in high school was most likely due to me not being exposed to anything inspirational or to be exact, to be exposed to not enough.

Inspiration has to come from somewhere. Motivation needs to be inspired. Whenever I’m feeling a little stumped or lazy, I turn on the geek and go to town surfing the internet, go to the library with no goal, watch some favorite movies, and/or go to galleries. Then production begins and it should not feel like a chore. Now if only I felt that way about writing endless papers and presentations.

9 Months in America series by Wing Young Huie

It has been a struggle to find work about Asian American life. There are many novels written about the topic, just not so much on photography. While researching through books and websites, I was happy to came across the work of Wing Young Huie’s 9 Months in America series. The project follows Huie and his wife, Tara’s “ethnocentric” journey across America, documenting the Asian in America. The investigation of seeing Asian America as both exotic and familiar is one that I can relate to. The series led to a book which is appropriately titled, “Looking for Asian America: An Ethnocentric Journey with Wing Young Huie” and is available for sale at University of MN Press and Amazon.com.

Huie will be lecturing and having a book-signing on Friday, November 16th at the Minnesota Center for Photography. Details can be found here.

Many Thanks

As you can see the blog has packed up its bags at blogger and moved to its new home at janetam.com. There will be many many new updates within the following weeks as I process new images and new projects.

The life of a senior pursuing her BFA in Art Photography thus far has been a tough ride. With some professional practice in the field, I feel it’s definitely not enough until I actually am tossed out there with no classroom to back me up. So here comes the job hunting. Digital labs, assisting, studios, darkrooms (the very very few in NYC), etc.

Along with the job hunting comes the question of getting my work out there. Out there, out there. With my body of work, mainly Welcome Home, the process of applications after applications for grants, shows, and photo conferences begins. It’s already begun with my nod to the SPE Regional.

Then, when things slow down; whether it be exposure (if lucky to have any) or my motivation, do I go to grad school next? Many professors and mentors have said I need to but I’m pretty sure the need to explore my options further is a priority.

I’ll keep thee posted.

well well well

SPE Regional was absolutely fantastic, especially being my first photo-conference. There were some great constructive criticism that I very much needed. Lots of awesome people to meet. Thanks to everyone for all their support and congratulations.
